Destination Guide: Knoxville Tennessee

Ijams Nature Center

Knoxville sometimes gets overlooked in Tennessee. It’s not quite as flashy or of the moment as Nashville or Memphis, but Knoxville has some cool things to see and do. Bonus: It’s only 90 minutes from Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Shenandoah National Park, making it a great stopover to or from either place.

Old City, Knoxville

 Knoxville Tennessee Things to Do:

  • Ijams Nature Center: Located around 10 minutes from downtown Knoxville, this is a perfect place to take young ones. There are a number of nature paths and in the summer, there is a large quarry for swimming and a high ropes course that looks awesome!

  • Market Square: The epicenter of downtown Knoxville is Market Square, featuring eateries and shopping, including Nothing Too Fancy. Walk from here to Old City to check out Rala and Pretentious Glass Company.

  • Blue Plate Special at Knoxville Visitor Center: Everyday except for Sunday you can pop into here to hear live bluegrass music at noon. Feel free to bring your lunch with you!

Knoxville Tennessee Places to Eat:

Food at Tomato Head

  • Tomato Head: Known for their sandwiches and pizza, we stopped in here for a late brunch, which was fantastic! Check out their biscuits and huevos ranchero.

  • The Stock and Barrel: Known for their burgers and whiskey, the spot is small, so expect a wait. Also, make sure to order a burger or whiskey, since that’s what they are known for!

  • Tandur Indian Kitchen: Located west of the city near the Bearden area, this is a fast casual Indian spot that is awesome. They take you through the entire menu on touch screens and options include Briyani, various currys and wraps.

  • Farmacy: Also located near Bearden, they are a farm to table restaurant with amazing beignets!

Knoxville Tennessee Places to Drink:

Flight of beer at Pretentious Beer Company

  • Pretentious Beer Company: started as just the Pretentious Glass Company, they started experimenting with brewing beer and the rest is history. All the tap handles are hand made, as are the glasses. Located in Old City.

  • Peter Kern Library: If you feel like a cocktail, check this place out. It’s located within the Oliver Hotel and you can get their either through their lobby behind a sliding door, or through the alley when the red light is on. Their menus is located in the books on the tables.

  • Craft Bastard Brewery: A pure neighborhood bar, this is located north of Old City in a renovated warehouse. Expect a casual environment with board games and food trucks.

Other things to note: Knoxville seems to be extremely dog friendly….they were at all the breweries and going on walks throughout downtown.
