Roadside Attraction: Get Rocked in Rock City Kansas!

Rock City Kansas, a great roadside attraction!

A Celebration of the Roadside Attraction! Welcome to the Hashtag59 Roadside Attraction, created by our writer and Trash cleanup host Jason M! After a bit of a hiatus from writing for Hashtag59, I wanted to come up with a topic all of us have in common.  Yes, we all love to travel, explore, and see what’s around the next bend.  Some of us can travel across the country, and some of us stay a little more local.  Nevertheless, no matter how far we explore…no matter the road…no matter the state…there will be a Roadside Attraction pulling at our curiosity strings, always. We get rocked in Rock City Kansas in this roadside attraction post.

Roadside attraction in Kansas

There are thousands upon thousands of possible stops around the country.  I wanted to select stops which had me making a hard right turn off the highway during my travels.  My hope is seeing what some of the other writers can add to the mix as well.

In addition, the term “Roadside Attraction” is very subjective, but at Hashtag59, we’re all about inclusivity!    Traditional places like the Cadillac Ranch in Texas or Wall Drug in South Dakota often get the press, but there are places with the spirit of the Roadside Attraction which will surprise and excite your travels.

Ultimately, I hope these attractions give you even more ideas for travel and adventure wherever you may find it.  The journey will always be a part of the adventure, and these stops along the way will add to your memory bank.  Who doesn’t want to see the House of Mud or the Second largest ball of twine in the world anyway?

This installment of the Roadside Attraction pulls me back to stop in 2014.  Our family was on the return leg of a massive road trip, somewhere in Kansas.  The heartland of America and what some have said is unremarkable.  I would say it is what you make it, and this stop helped make it memorable!

We needed a quick stop to stretch our legs, eat lunch, and just get out of the car for a bit.  Rock City did just that!

It was a bit off the westbound I-70, close to Minneapolis, Kansas –I love that!

It was advertised as “this is the only place in the world where so many concretions of such giant size are found in one area.”  I hear concretions and think of the local fossil hunter with a softball sized one in their hand.  Tapping with a hammer to reveal a specimen from eons ago.  These were a tad different.  Truth in advertising, these things were massive.

As the three of us scrambled all over these car and truck-sized spheres, the two adults turned into kids again.  We even crawled through a donut hole!  There is something comforting about this 5-acre park.  You feel the joy of being a kid of any age.

We spent about an hour exploring, playing, and eating a quick lunch.  A perfect stop during our travels back home.

The Roadside Attraction spirit lives on at Rock City, Kansas.  It offers a fantastic hands-on activity while bringing out the wonder and curiosity of youth at an affordable cost.

Be sure to check this “Registered National Landmark” when you are traveling through the middle of the country and let us know what you think!
